Stegosaurus
Classification: Reptiles, bird-bottomed dinosaurs
Body length: 9 m
Body weight: 3 t
Period: Late Jurassic
Localities: North America
Stegosaurus had 17 bony plates embedded in its back. The purpose of these plates is not clear. Stegosaurus also had spines at the end of its flexible tail.
These spines were up to 1.5 metres long, protruded from the sides of the tail and protected it from predators. This dinosaur was an herbivore, eating only plants.
In fact, it had to eat a large amount of low-calorie plants every day to maintain its body, and it did this using its toothless beak. Its tiny brain was barely the size of a nut.
