Triceratops
Classification: Bird-bottomed dinosaurs, ceratopsids
Body length: 9 m
Body weight: 12 t
Period: Late Cretaceous
Locality: North America
Triceratops was a rhinoceros-like dinosaur. It walked on four sturdy legs and had three horns on its face with a large bony plate protruding from the back of its skull.
The horns were probably for protection against predators. When they clasped Triceratops, it attacked its enemies like a modern rhinoceros, which must have been a very effective defence.
Triceratops was an herbivore and fed on underground plants with its sturdy beak. Unlike most other dinosaurs, it could chew its food well with its teeth in its jaws.
